We didn't get to post yesterday due to lack of internet, but obviously that was sorted out this morning. Yesterday we finished up our time in Newport, RI. I went for a 7am run along the Cliff walk which was a run I wouldn't mind doing everyday! It was so beautiful and invigorating. Everything was so quiet and you could just imagine what kind of bustling work would be going on if all those mansions were still inhabited.
When I got home we had breakfast and got ready to go see one final mansion. In the end we opted to see two very exquisite victorian houses. The Isaac Bell house- which ended up being an empty shell with no furniture which I thought was great because you got to see the actual architecture, and also some of the renovations that were being done. For example they had striped out shelves that were put in and there was original wallpaper. Also in some rooms there were writing on the wall that was from the original builders. In the other house the Kingscote, there was so much furniture from all over the world and artwork. Alot of china from China (being that the people that lived there were china tradesman). This house had some really exciting woodwork, and very pretty stained glass (some of the first tiffany co. to be installed in a house) They also had this really cool cork ceiling panels (also the first of it's kind to be installed into a house as decoration).
After we left we got in the car for another excrutiating 3.5 hour drive to Portland, ME. We drove through Boston, and over a very awesome internal tension bridge. The rest of the ride was rather humdrum, and included alot of dozing for many of us.
Arriving in Portland we quickly changed at the hotel and headed into town to get on the Portland Schooner Co. Wendameen (http://www.portlandschooner.com/portland_only_historic_windjammers_wendameen.shtml)
(This is where I may possibly be working for the next three months) We had a great time opened a few bottles of wine, enjoyed the ride. There wasn't much wind and it was rather cloudy and cold but it was sailing. The ship was so beautiful, very old and made of wood. Very lovely! Afterwards we met up with my Dad's friend Barry and his friend Edna for dinner at a place called Andy's pretty good food and local entertainment. Our friends who manned the sailboat happen to make that their drinking hole that night too so we ran into them again.
Overall a good night.
